Thermal Dye Sublimation Printing to CD-R and DVD-R

Thermal printing is an alternative to inkjet printing, there are three basic types of format printing, with two from the same manufacturer. Rimage produce the Prism printer for high speed low resolution printing - typically for black text. Rimage also produce the Everest range of thermal printers for high resolution photo quality printing. Teac manufacture the P-55 dye sublimation printer which is prefered thermal disc printing system utilised by Media Matters Technology for specialist customer requirements, the P-55 provides remarkably high quality photo realistic prints for CD and DVD. teac provides the industry's highest quality dye sublimation prints.

Silk Screen Printing for replicated CD and DVD

This process is typically used for quantities of over 1000 CD's or DVD's. Screen printing is the traditional method for printing directly on to replicated CD and DVD and allows you to match Pantone references and to have metallic or flurescent colours printed.

Screen printing is the process of applying UV inks directly to the disc surface using a woven mesh or screen in conjunction with an ink blocking stencil.  A roller or squeegee is then run across the screen  which pushes the ink through the open parts of the screen, transfering the ink to disc surface below. A screen is produced for each colour (normally four colours are used) and each colour is printed individually building up the completed image on the disc.

A disc screen printer will have a minimum of four stations (one for each colour) and the automated machinery rotates the disc to each station in turn. This process is completed at very high speed enabling many discs to produced in a relatively short period of time.

Litho Printing for replicated CD and DVD

Litho printing for CD and DVD is alternative to screen printing. Typically a replication plant will utilise both types of printing and depending on the supplied artwork, will pick the method best suited for that particular artwork.

Litho printing uses a metal plate, this is usually made of aluminium, the plate has the image that requires printing etched on to the surface, as with screen printing there is one plate for each colour (again a minimum of four colours) to make up the completed image. Hydrophobic areas of the plate repel water and accept ink, this reversed image is then transfered to a printing roller (offset) and is then printed directly to the surface of the CD or DVD disc.

Media Matters digital printing services provide top quality printing in house for short run production of CD Jewel Case booklets and inlays, together with inserts for DVD cases and even short run card sleeves and CD or DVD Digipaks as well as conventional short run production of bookletts for either CD or DVD cases. Digital printing can either be black and white or full colour, and utilising high end technology from Canon and Fiery (Postscript RIP developers), Media Matters can produce from one copy to hundreds of copies quickly and easily.
